PUTTING ON THE RITZ FOR CANCER SUPPORT AT THE ABBEY

PICTURES BY PAUL O'SULLIVAN

PICTURES BY PAUL O’SULLIVAN

By Paul O’Sullivan: Water charges and next week’s Budget were the farthest things on everyone’s mind in the Abbey Hotel, Donegal Town on Saturday night last as they came in their hundreds for a non stop, full on night of costume, dance and drama in support of National Breast Cancer Research and the local Solace Cancer Support group.

The cabaret show “Putting on the Ritz” was probably one the best value for money (€10) entertainment shows this writer has seen for some time. The talent, energy, and slickness of production was as professional as they come.

It was the brainchild of Roisin Gillen (whose mum Robbie also participated) and involved professional dance instructor Shona Tinneny who gave her time free as did a cast of over twenty locals in support of Breast Cancer research.

An interesting “twist” to the evening was the performance of Scarlett Rose (aka Martin McGuinness from Ardara) who brought the house down. Martin gave his time and considerable time talent free gratis. Kara Kelly is a professional Burlesque performer and it was nice to see her back performing in her home town to support a great cause. Rachel McGroary, Tracey Faulkner and Azalice O Donavan could comfortably sing on any stage in any show.

Andrew Monk was a key ingredient in this extravagant show who entertained, provided sound and lighting and provided technical assistance. The majority of the cast was local, most of whom never performed in public. The performance of Thriller was spectacular with the “resurrected” cast dressed in 20′s costume giving a blistering performance. This Show has huge potential for further fundraising, it would be a shame if its’ energy and talent doesn’t go on to something much bigger.

The organisers would like to thank Donegal Daily for their publicity and support.

unnamed-3TV chef Donal Skehan plans to cook up a storm in his new Kitchen Hero tour and you may be part of the show.

“I’ll be getting help from the audience cooking. Sure, everybody always wants to nominate somebody in their house that doesn’t do the cooking. It’ll be great craic,” Donal told Donegal Daily.

The 25-year-old food writer and television presenter brings his live cooking show to An Grianán Theatre, Letterkenny, next month where he will be cooking six recipes on stage.

Following the success of last year’s live tour, Donal wanted to do it all over again.

“It was such a great time and even people who don’t normally do the cooking came along. I don’t want anymore couch-cooking,” he told us.

Donal will cook up delicious, everyday, simple Home Cooked meals live on stage, with lots of fun, loads of food and lashings of audience participation.

He said: “These are recipes that everyone can make and the aromas around the theatre will be unbelievable.”

There will be lots of cooking tips and he will be answering all your questions.

He told Donegal Daily that he’s looking forward to coming to the North West as he loves the area.

“In my boyband days I was living in Strabane and would have been in Letterkenny so I’m fairly familiar with it. I’m really looking forward to the tour and meeting everyone,” said the Kitchen Hero star.

Donal is currently filming a mini series for the Food Network in Vietnam.

After the show there will be a chance to meet Donal who’ll be signing books, fielding questions and taking the “odd selfie or two”.

The Letterkenny Chamber of Commerce is once again hosting their hugely popular and ‘terrifyingly scary’ Halloween Fest, which will provide fun and games to all.

On Friday, the 31st of October, the town centre will be filled with entertainment, face painting, trick or treating, a Pet Parade and even some scary dancing.

The festival builds on the success of last year’s event that is now making it’s mark on Letterkenny.

This year the week starts with Letterkenny CDP holding their annual Monster Bash on Sunday 26th October in Letterkenny Community Centre.

Then during the week everyone will be getting into the spirit with decorations, facepainting, characters and lots of fun taking place in Letterkenny Shopping Centre, Letterkenny Retail Parks, The Courtyard Shopping Centre and of course Main Street.

On Friday 31st, businesses across Letterkenny will be participating in a trick or treat trail for all the children and along the way there will be a chance to have your face painted.

You’ll also get to hear some ghoulish stories on Church Lane, play some games at the Courthouse and have your photo taken in our dedicated photobooth in The Courtyard Shopping Centre.

There will also be a fancy dress competitions and lots more.

This year will see the second annual Pet Parade taking place at 4.15pm.

Toni Forrester told Donegal Daily, “Last year we got a small start with over 20 pets and their owners in all kinds of costumes, so this year why not dress up and bring your dog, cat, iguana along and join in the fun.

“It’s just a short parade to end the afternoon activities.

Gerard Grant Chamber President told Donegal Daily, ”I’m pleased to launch the ShopLK Halloween Fest this year.

“With just a month to go we are delighted to be working with our ShopLK members, Letterkenny Town Team and Letterkenny CDP who have their own annual Monster Bash and who will be providing out photobooth and Halloween games.

“This year is a real community effort, people love dressing up so why not make it a family occasion this year.

“Last year’s campaign was a massive success with lots of Children and whole families dressing up.

“It was thoroughly enjoyed by the children, parents and the business owners of the town.

“There was a great atmosphere created around the event and it was lovely to see the children having such a good time.

They’re hoping to build on the success of the last two years and make this year’s Halloween Festival the best yet.

They’d love to see as many families and young people as possible come to Main Street and then visit the other shopping areas such as the Retail Parks and Letterkenny Shopping Centre.

There will be prizes, treats and some surprises along the way.

Niall Brennan and Ronan Friel performing at the launch of their CD.

Ronan Friel has shown that transition year doesn’t have to be a chore.

Ronan, a transition year student at Loreto Community School, in Milford is an acclaimed singer and songwriter.

And as part of the TY mini company programme in the school he has launched a CD featuring himself and Niall Brennan on vocals.

The CD features four original songs written by Ronan and two covers. The mini company made up of Ronan Friel, Cahir O Connor, Deirdre Mc Daid and Elliot Herraghty put together the plans that have led to the launch of this album.

The company investigated possibilities to record and publish the CD, finally settling on an online company to provide the service. With considerable investment from the four shareholders, the focus then shifted to marketing the album with the help of social media and the local press.

An exciting vibe has been created from the Facebook, Snapchat and Twitter pages which have had a lot of hits. The buzz has also been transferred to the school which hosted a launch day on Tuesday 21st of October, with all classes in the school being treated to a preview of the album in the school canteen.

Feedback has been very positive and many pre orders have been placed. Alecoe Haughey, 11, from Killybegs is pinching herself after landing a role in a star-studded Christmas film.

Thousands of young hopeful actors and actresses auditioned for what was a life changing opportunity for the young cast selected.

Thankfully Alecoe was one of the very few young actresses chosen to star in the movie “A Christmas Star”.

She was put through a rigorous auditioning process, but the young actresses performed exceptionally well throughout the entire process, to ensure she landed the coveted role.

11-year old Alecoe attends Niall Mor NS, and her mother Anne said she’s absolutely over the moon to have landed the part.

She told Donegal Daily, “From an early age she performed little shows at home with her brother and declared almost from when she could speak that she wanted to be an actress.

“Finding out she has been selected for a part in A Christmas Star is just a dream come true for Alecoe.

“She has enjoyed every minute of each audition. She has made new friends and hopefully will make a lot more.

“With each additional callback her confidence grew and getting the final offer of a part was just a joy beyond words for Alecoe.

“She just can’t wait for the filming to begin.

The young actress will be starring alongside some blockbuster names in the film industry, most notably Hollywood superstar Liam Neeson, who will provide the film’s voiceover.

Other notable names set to appear in the film are, Bronagh Waugh (The Fall) and Suranne Jones (Scott & Bailey, The Crimson Field).

The film is being produced by Oscar winning film producer, Gareth Ellis Unwin who produced the critically acclaimed film The King’s Speech which starred Colin Firth.

The film also boasts the influences of acclaimed director Richard Elson (M.I. High, Shadow Trade, Steffi) and award winning film composer, Patrick Doyle as part of its production team.

The film itself, is a classic Cinemagic Christmas film.

It’s a heart-warming story of a spirited young girl who charms an entire village.

The film is set to hit the screens in early December 2015.
