Donegal cartoonist Jarla will be zooming into the nation’s households next week after being asked to appear on RTE’s hugely popular Operation Transformation.

Although an avid fan of the gym himself, the Letterkenny man won’t be flexing his muscles on the show.

Instead, Jarla (Duffy) will be teaching the featured families how to cartoon from the comfort of their homes.

Jarla, who is originally from Convent Road (Back Road) has built up a huge following in recent years as a cartoon tutor.

His work features in dozens of schools across the county and also in Letterkenny University Hospital where he is a frontline worker.

In recent weeks he has launched his own cartooning YouTube show to help children pass the time during lockdown.

RTE heard of his talents and called to his home in Glencar recently to film him doing what he does best.

A delighted Jarla told Donegal Daily “It’s nice to get a bit of exposure but I’m just delighted that the kids are tuning into the YouTube channel.

“I love cartooning and I’ve been at it for as long as I can remember. It’s great to see the satisfaction kids get when they see their finished cartoons,” he said.

Talented young choir singers from across Donegal have found a way around cancelled rehearsals by taking the virtual approach to performing together.

Fans of the Donegal Youth Choir have been blown away by their new recording of Coldplay’s Fix You.

The young performers launched the video on Thursday in the hope of spreading some positivity during the Covid-19 crisis.

Choir Leader Sara McLaughlin commented on the inspiration for the project: “One of our choir members recently commented that “it was like a part of her life was missing”. That’s what music and being a part of this choir family means, it is part of who we are.”

Since they were unable to meet for regular rehearsals, Sara decided a great way to keep the choir alive would be to do a virtual get together. The video was a huge undertaking, with 24 performers recording clips from home. The footage was compiled with the help of Kevin Murray on music.

The video has already gathered over 2,300 views on Facebook and is set to go live on Youtube later today.

Three Donegal siblings have created an online hit after recording their own catchy song for the Covid-19 lockdown.

Like all children, the Breathnach’s of Manorcunningham are at home and “stuck with the family”.

But, after some consideration, they decided to turn their situation into a group project to make others smile.

Gaelscoil Adhamhnáin pupils Sadbh, Colm Óg and Aoife tapped into their music and drama skills to put their own spin on an Oliver musical hit. The young performers themed their song on advice for the lockdown and Sadbh, the eldest, took on the directing duties of the video.

Sadbh played the part of Dodger in DYMT’s production of OLIVER last summer, so she knows the song very well.

The children were busy working on the song and dance for two days. And their hard work clearly paid off, as the video has gained over 30,000 views and was featured on the Six O’Clock Show on Virgin Media One.

With thanks to mum Sinead Gibson for sharing the video.

DANIEL O’Donnell gave some of his elderly fans a real treat with an impromptu ‘concert’ in the garden of a community hospital.

The Donegal singing star visited Falcarragh Community Hospital on Friday afternoon.

Daniel sang for the residents in the 35-bed unit and spoke through the window to his adoring fans.

“They were actually watching one of his videos in the morning,” Anne-Marie Duffy, the Clinical Nurse Manager at Falcarragh Community Hospital, told Donegal Daily.

“Words can’t express the joy he brought us. They all love Daniel, naturally enough. After they had watched his videos, we went and told them that we had a special guest coming. It was just so surreal.”

Daniel called the hospital to say he could pop over in the afternoon.

Staff quickly rallied to get their patients at the ready.

Anne-Marie said: “It was just fantastic. It was such a treat for them all. Daniel is just such a great ambassador for Donegal.

“He went up to the windows, asking where they were from and everything. It was literally like a concert, we got the blinds and the curtains down from the windows so we could line them all up to watch out.

“It was beautiful and very emotional actually. The residents were in aw of him.”

Daniel O’Donnell brought a ray of happiness to Dungloe Community Hospital again this week when he sang to residents in the sunshine.

The Kincasslagh singer was in the summer spirit on Monday when he performed a private outdoor concert at the nursing home.

In keeping with Covid-19 guidelines, Daniel kept a safe distance from residents and staff by performing in the courtyard. It was the perfect weather for all the windows of the nursing home to be opened wide for the music to flow inside.

A recording of Daniel’s ‘Release Me’ was shared on the Dungloe Hospital Facebook page, where fans once again praised the singer’s kind gesture.

“One in a million, such a great man always thinking of others,” wrote one Facebook user.

Another said: “You are one beautiful person. Must bring such joy to the people and makes their day. Gives them something different to talk about.”

“This man is a special gift from heaven. Thank you for giving the music back into our lives. You are loved all over the world,” said another comment.

Daniel has been surprising nursing home and care home residents all around his local area throughout the Covid-19 emergency. Dungloe, Gweedore and Falcarragh homes have all welcomed concerts from the entertainer at a time when no visitors are permitted.

But Daniel has been given special permission from Gardaí to travel to community hospitals and brighten the residents’ days in a safe way.

Donegal television presenter Tommy Martin says he hasn’t been back to his native county in almost six months and is missing it badly.

The Annagry man is the well-known face of Virgin Media Sport including its Champions League coverage.

Since sporting fixtures stopped due to Covid-19, Tommy has been redeployed to the breakfast slot.

He has fitted in well but the one thing he is missing is the hills of Donegal.

He revealed “What really hit home early in the year is you can make as many plans as you want but you just don’t know what is going to happen.

“I haven’t been home to Donegal since January and I was only saying last week, apart from the year I went travelling to Australia years ago, this is probably the longest time in my life that I haven’t been to Donegal.

“I really feel like there is nowhere I’d rather be.”

Tommy’s home from home is close to Croke Park on Dublin’s northside.

He said that the lockdown has made him think about all the things he took for granted beforehand.

He told the Mirror “The thing that really bothered me, apart from the tragic losses and the health side, is the day-to-day side of it all.

“It has taken away a lot of the things we love the most. Like going to restaurants, going to pubs, concerts or matches, it’s such a big part of the summer and the excitement of the GAA championship or even the local stuff.

“I live close to Croke Park and you can hear the roars from my house but I don’t know when we will see those big crowds of 80,000 people packed together in the stadium.

“It seems a long way away at the moment and that is quite sad.

“We really lost something really magical in our lives.”

As for a return to his role as a sports presenter within the station, he said: “As far as I know they are hoping there will be some sport back with the champion’s league and stuff by the autumn. From maybe August or September things could get back up again.
